Selecting Beam Spreads and Angles for LED Spotlights

LED spotlights are powerful luminaries, which are designed for illuminating far-flung targets. The unit’s tight beam spreads make this possible, as well as its compact LED chip configuration.

When purchasing an LED spotlight, it is important to choose the right beam angle. This process ensures the lamp can provide the right amount of illumination, while decreasing the risks of light spillage and dull lighting effects.

LED Spotlight Beam Recommendations

When choosing an appropriate beam angle for LED spotlights, it is important to consider that narrow beam angles do not result in increased illumination. Generally speaking, the lumen output of the unit stays the same, but the intensity of the unit increases – due to the tighter beam spread.

With this in mind, LED spotlights with tight beams in the range of 24 degrees (or lower) are ideal for work sites with high ceilings, such as manufacturing plants and warehouses. If the unit is illuminating a specific object or structure, a narrower spotlight beam can be used, such as a 15-degree beam spread.

Furthermore, it is possible to combine or overlap LED spotlight beams for maximum coverage of the target. For such lighting preferences, it is recommended for the beam spread diameters to be equal to (or larger than) the amount of space between the object and the fixture. As a general rule, most LED spotlights are installed 20 feet from the target.

Bulbs and Reflectors

In most cases, the type of bulb and design of the LED lamp determines how the spotlight beam is achieved and manipulated. PAR-type (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) LED bulbs provide outward illumination via reflectors, which focus the beam onto the target.

On the other hand, LED spotlights with R-type bulbs (Bulged Reflector) offer diffused lighting conditions. This type of spotlight is best for smooth light beams in locations with high activities.
